In 2006, at Artists Space, New York City, Balmond’s fractal sculpture H_Edge was built for the first time. Encompassing the whole of the gallery, yet creating a dimension of its own, H_Edge invited visitors into a maze of shifting scales and undefinable shapes. Comprised from thousands of aluminium plates that are held, against intuition, by stainless steel chains, the piece seemed not to touch the floor, but rather levitated on gradients of light.
