ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN GROWTH

Cecil Balmond, speaking on a recent visit to Colombo, highlighted the role of architecture with regard to growth and investment opportunities for emerging economies. The talk titled ‘Big Architecture And Cities’ was hosted by The Council For Business With Britain (CBB).

“Here in Colombo Fort, we got massive amount of wonderful building stock…it’s a magical place if you look at the original plan. It’s an actual island, it could be wonderful and it could out-rival anything in South Asia, if it’s done properly with sensible planning,” he stressed, citing Barcelona as a benchmark for urban planning in cities. The CBB is a non-profit organisation that promotes trade and fosters a healthy business relationship between Sri Lanka and Britain.

With a growing Balmond Studio footprint in emerging Asian economies, it has been exciting to observe in a wider context, how design can help shape these cities and societies.
